Low vision assessments

Making the most of the vision you have.

Some eye conditions mean eyesight cannot be corrected to normal levels with spectacles, contact lenses or surgery. This is called low vision.

Although the vision is not working as well as it should, in most cases there are a number of ways we can maximise the use of the remaining vision. A low vision assessment identifies the degree of vision loss, and our optician will advise on maximising your visual potential to help improve your quality of life.

Low vision aids

We provide an extensive range of low vision aids (LVAs), and our optometrist will demonstrate the right ones for you and discuss lighting and other strategies.

  • Specialist spectacles
  • Magnifiers and telescopes
  • Electronic visual enhancing equipment
  • Lamps and sunshields

Free of charge under the Welsh Low Vision Scheme.

We can provide any magnifiers or other equipment you need, including lamps, sunshields and specialised glasses, completely free of charge. We also replace any equipment that breaks or becomes faulty free of charge, and when aids are no longer needed or need a stronger strength, they can be returned to us and new ones ordered if necessary.

WECS, previously WECI / PEARS

The Wales Eye Care Scheme.

Our optician is qualified to take part in the Wales Eye Care Scheme and can carry out free eye examinations depending on your circumstances.

Selected groups of patients at greater risk of eye disease are entitled to an Eye Health Examination, a more in-depth assessment. If you have an acute or sudden eye problem, you can also be seen under WECS, either by contacting us directly or through a referral from your GP.

This is all covered by the NHS and Welsh Government funding, regardless of your financial circumstances.
